xAPI (Experience API)
A modern e-learning specification that allows learning systems to track and store learning experiences in a consistent format, enabling tracking beyond traditional LMS boundaries.
xAPI (Experience API), also known as Tin Can API, is the next-generation e-learning standard that overcomes SCORM's limitations. Unlike SCORM, which only tracks learning within an LMS, xAPI can capture learning experiences from any source—mobile apps, simulations, virtual reality, on-the-job activities, and more. Data is stored as 'statements' in a Learning Record Store (LRS) using a simple Actor-Verb-Object structure (e.g., 'John completed Safety Training'). This enables comprehensive learning analytics and supports modern learning ecosystems.
