Knowing how to respond in emergencies can help protect lives. All employees should be familiar with their workplace's emergency procedures and know how to react quickly and safely. **Types of Workplace Emergencies** - Fire or explosion - Medical emergencies - Severe weather - Chemical spills - Security threats - Power outages - Natural disasters **General Emergency Response Principles** 1. **Stay calm**: Panic can lead to poor decisions 2. **Alert others**: Activate alarms and notify emergency services 3. **Follow procedures**: Use established emergency protocols 4. **Help others**: Assist colleagues if safe to do so 5. **Evacuate**: Leave the building when instructed 6. **Account for everyone**: Report to designated assembly points **Fire Safety Basics** - Know the location of fire exits and extinguishers - Use stairs, not elevators, during evacuations - If you encounter smoke, stay low - Feel doors before opening-if hot, find another route - Close doors behind you to slow fire spread **Medical Emergencies** - Call emergency services immediately - Don't move injured persons unless there's immediate danger - Apply first aid if trained and safe to do so - Stay with the person until help arrives **Your Responsibilities** - Know your evacuation routes and assembly points - Participate in emergency drills - Report hazards that could cause emergencies - Know who the trained first aiders are
